Leadership question

Hello NEOA members! PR committee here. It was great to see so many of you
at the conference!
Speaking of which, as you noticed, we elected a new slate of officers, but
there are board positions that will be open and committees to fill. Arielle
Derival-Joseph, our incoming President, will be reaching out. And, as
always if you have an interest or questions, reach out to a board or
committee member you know or to Arielle.
This transition, which happens every year, made me think about Leadership.
The importance of being an effective leader, what it means to us all and
how we can learn from each other.
Our Next Navigator, NEOA's NEW Newsletter will focus on this topic.
We have one question that we would love you to answer in one sentence or 2.
We will include many of your answers in the next edition of the Navigator!
We are ALL leaders! And, we are so fortunate to have so many fabulous ones
in our NEOA community. Please take a few minutes and respond to this
question by next Monday.
WHAT DOES GOOD LEADERSHIP MEAN TO YOU?
Thank you!
Cheers!
Linda and Bryan

A good leader does not ask others to follow the leader to a destination, but shares with them where they all need to go, asks how they might all best get there, then walks beside them as they travel together. A good leader celebrates with others when they arrive, and shares in the disappointment if they do not.

I would add that good leadership offers a shared vision with opportunity for equal participation from everyone in achieving it. It is creating opportunities and support for others to take on challenges and grow, while reflecting back both strengths and ways to improve. It is deep listening and openness to feedback. It is showing up with authenticity AND good boundaries!

Hello NEOA members! PR committee here. It was great to see so many of you at the conference!

Speaking of which, as you noticed, we elected a new slate of officers, but there are board positions that will be open and committees to fill. Arielle Derival-Joseph, our incoming President, will be reaching out. And, as always if you have an interest or questions, reach out to a board or committee member you know or to Arielle.

This transition, which happens every year, made me think about Leadership. The importance of being an effective leader, what it means to us all and how we can learn from each other.

Our Next Navigator, NEOA's NEW Newsletter will focus on this topic.

We have one question that we would love you to answer in one sentence or 2. We will include many of your answers in the next edition of the Navigator!

We are ALL leaders! And, we are so fortunate to have so many fabulous ones in our NEOA community. Please take a few minutes and respond to this question by next Monday.

WHAT DOES GOOD LEADERSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

Thank you!

Cheers!

I would add that good leadership offers a shared vision with opportunity for equal participation from everyone in achieving it. It is creating opportunities and support for others to take on challenges and grow, while reflecting back both strengths and ways to improve. It is deep listening and openness to feedback. Good leadership means navigating difficult times with empathy and a willingness to listen. A strong leader recognizes the potential in others and nurtures it—not only for the individual's growth but for the success of the collective goal. Most importantly, a good leader understands the value of community and embraces the ongoing journey of learning and evolving alongside those around them. Leadership is an evolving state.
